There is a moment many women experience in midlife that is difficult to articulate.

Things that once felt manageable suddenly feel exhausting.
Conversations that were once tolerated now feel draining.
Expectations that were quietly carried for years begin to feel heavier.

It can feel as though something inside is shifting.

Some women describe it as losing patience. Others as becoming more sensitive. Many wonder if they are simply overwhelmed.

But what is rarely explained is that these changes are not only psychological. They are deeply biological.

Perimenopause is not just a hormonal transition. It is a neurological, metabolic and physiological recalibration. And with it often comes a profound reorganisation of how women relate to themselves, their energy and their boundaries.

The Quite Decline in Hormonal Buffering

One of the earliest hormonal changes in perimenopause is the gradual decline in progesterone.

Progesterone is often described as a reproductive hormone, but its influence extends far beyond fertility. It interacts with GABA receptors in the brain, helping regulate calmness, emotional buffering and stress resilience.

As progesterone levels fluctuate, many women notice a reduced ability to absorb pressure.

What once felt manageable now feels heavy.
Noise feels louder.
Demand feels sharper.
Emotional bandwidth narrows.

This is not fragility. It is the nervous system recalibrating.

The buffering capacity that helped smooth out stress begins to change. The system becomes less willing to compensate for chronic overload. These shifts rarely happen in isolation. The Nervous System Stops Negotiating

For many women, midlife is the first time the body begins to push back against long-standing patterns of overextension.

Years of juggling professional responsibilities, caregiving roles and emotional labour often accumulate. During reproductive years, higher levels of oestrogen and progesterone can help sustain this output.

As hormonal fluctuations begin, the nervous system becomes less tolerant of chronic activation.

This may manifest as:
• overwhelm in busy environments
• reduced social tolerance
• need for more quiet time
• emotional fatigue

Stress Physiology and Reduced Recovery

The hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis, the system regulating stress response, also changes in midlife.

Years of cumulative stress can alter cortisol patterns. Some women experience elevated evening cortisol, while others notice flattened daytime energy.

This shift may contribute to:
• feeling wired but tired
• difficulty recovering from stress
• sleep disruption
• reduced emotional bandwidth

When recovery capacity decreases, behaviours that once felt sustainable may no longer feel so.

When the Past Feels Closer

There is another layer I often observe in clinic.

Midlife can be the period when experiences that were never fully processed seem to return with new intensity. Women may find themselves revisiting old relational patterns, unresolved grief, or stress that had been pushed aside for years.

This is sometimes described as emotional overload. But biology may also play a role.

Emerging research suggests that hormonal changes influence how the brain processes stress and memory. A 2026 study led by researchers at the University of California, Irvine found that high levels of estrogen in the hippocampus may increase vulnerability to stress-related memory difficulties, particularly when stress occurs during high-estrogen states.

This does not mean estrogen is harmful. It plays essential roles in learning, memory and cognitive flexibility. But shifts in estrogen signalling may influence how stress memories are processed and revisited.

This helps explain why midlife can feel like a period when unfinished experiences surface. Not because they are new, but because the physiological buffering that once kept them in the background is changing.

In my practice, this is often where I integrate kinesiology. Not as a substitute for medical care, but as a way of helping the body reduce the stress charge around past events so the nervous system no longer reacts as though the past is still present.

Why Boundaries Become Non-Negotiable

Many women describe midlife as the moment when they begin setting boundaries more clearly.

Reduced hormonal buffering, altered stress response and nervous system sensitivity combine to make overcommitment physically uncomfortable.

The body begins to signal:
This is too much.
This no longer aligns.
This pace is not sustainable.

These signals are not signs of dysfunction. They are part of a biological recalibration toward energy conservation and long-term resilience.

Inflammation and Sensory Sensitivity

Low-grade inflammation also tends to increase in perimenopause. This can influence neurotransmitter balance and sensory processing.

Some women notice:
• increased irritability
• heightened sensitivity to stimulation
• reduced tolerance to conflict
• emotional fatigue

This reflects interactions between immune signalling, hormonal fluctuations and nervous system regulation.
